REVIEW - The Only Boy by Jordan Locke

Synopsis:

Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out.

Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed.

Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him.

Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.

REVIEW:

I received this book for review, so thank you!

As usually I'll express my honest review. I wanted to read this book because the idea that was based on, sounded good, original, for me. But this novel wasn't so good as I was expecting, or I was expecting too much.

It's not a bad story, the idea is well written but I couldn't feel anything throughout the book, I couldn't care or feel something for those characters, I sensed nothing when Mary or Taylor were in danger, and this isn't good. I can't read and I don't accept to read a book that make me feel indiferent.  And, really, I was sorry that I couldn't sympathize with them and that I didn't really enjoyed the story.

About the story. I said that the idea sounded interesting to me - yes, and it was, but that there some things that for me were and remained blurred. I feel like some more explanations about some stuff would made the reader understand better what's happening, who's doing that and who's good or bad. Because, for me, from the second part of the book everything went confusing and stuff happened very fast, and until you understood something other thing was going on. I don't want to say that I like slower books, but neither fast book that leave me behind. A fast book which is confusing is not good, even the idea is good.

I was saying that I couldn't sympathize with the characters; well, is not because I didn't like them, but I felt like they weren't so developed, that they were more like sketched. And even at the ending of the book without thinking about some blurry details I don't know/remember something about them; of course without speaking about names.

I can't like a book that has such characters created or a book that becomes confusing because of the writing style. Though, without speaking about this two big things that bothered me, it was an ok read, something fast to read and kind of something fast to forget, even based on that idea. Maybe you'll enjoy more! So, if the idea is sounds good to you, then try it!
